128456 - Numerical Investigation of the Combustion Process in a Lean Burn Gas Turbine Fuel Injector
Fuel-flexible gas turbine engines are of significant importance in power generation, with a growing demand across a wide spectrum of applications in aerospace and power engineering sectors systems. In the present work, a lean-burn gas turbine combustor has been designed incorporating a multi-source fuel-flexible injector, with the capability to operate using both liquid and gaseous fuels, including jet-A, kerosene, methane, and hydrogen. The present work investigates the aerodynamics, mixing characteristics, and combustion behavior of the pilot mixer of a fuel-flexible lean burn fuel injector, considering methane as the fuel. Flame stability, temperature distribution and species concentration are assessed to optimize the operational range of the injector. The pilot section of the injector assembly, comprise of two axial swirlers equipped with clockwise and counterclockwise circulation swirl vanes for air and a circumferentially positioned swirler passage within the interior of the pilot section's swirlers act as the fuel injection passage. A central toroidal recirculation zone (CTRZ) is observed at the venturi exit area of the pilot section and the flame is stabilized near the venturi tip. Combustion process is observed to be stable at equivalence ratios in the range of 0.5 to 0.7 and the geometry optimizations are performed to improve the injector performance.
