128906 - Using Hydrogen for the Generation of Non-Propulsive Energy in Civil Aviation - Design and Performance of Combined Micro Gas Turbine and Organic Rankine Cycle Systems
The interest in using hydrogen for civil aircraft propulsion is well known and has already been explored by the aero industry extensively. In this context, Iron NPE is a 25 M€ project funded by the Government of Spain with the aim to develop an efficiency, flexible and compact generator of non-propulsive energy running on hydrogen. With the aim to achieve very high efficiency by exploiting the favourable boundary conditions at flight altitude (-50°C), two different technologies are explored in the project: PEM fuel cells (high and low-temperature) and micro gas turbines. These systems deliver a stream of hot gases which is harvested by a bottoming Organic Rankine Cycle system downstream to further enhance global performance.
This paper presents the first part of the work, and is comprised of two sections. The first section presents the thermodynamic assessment of the system, including sensitivity analyses enabling the selection of operating parameters at rated conditions. The second section of the paper presents a discussion about size, weight and the need auxiliary components (Balance of Plant equipment) in order to iform the selection of the technology. The paper is complemented by another paper submitted to the conference and discussing off-design operation of both technology options.
