84535 - Pioneering Turbomachinery Education with Multi-Platform App for Blading Design
This paper presents the development of an educational design app for turbomachinery applications. The app is operating in multiple comptational platforms and is used to assist students in the understanding of turbomachinery design. The app has been applied in the Master's level course for turbomachinery design. The students have been trained to use the thermodynamic and kinematic principals of turbomachinery design. The student group has been assessed using modern age computational tools that are now available is their fingertips. The students group has been surveyed regarding the extend of theis improved understanding of turbomachinery design assisted by the use of the mobile app. In this application the design of axial flow compressors and axial flow turbines is shown for educational purposes. The thermodynamic and fluid mechanics principles have been used in order to develop enhanced understanding of blading design for Turbomachinery
The app is a velocity analysis application of a turbomachinery stage. The user can easily extract useful results and velocity diagrams by importing some dimensionless sizes, input-output angles and general geometric features. This application gives also the ability to compare cases with different input parameters.
The app has been produced for education purposes. Through a quick and easy analysis of the velocity triangles inside a turbine or a compressor the student could experiment and thus gain a deeper understanding of the operation of an energy system.
The student interaction has been assessed using assignments and group projects. Overall, the student showed extreme interest. Their interaction between the students the teaching assistants and the professors have been assessed using an online questionnaire. The outcome has been analysed and are presented in this paper.
