100945 - Investigations of Turbine Aero-Thermal Characteristics With Air Cooling and Sealing System
This study investigates the rim sealing method for small gas turbine engine (GTE) by providing coolant air into the cavity between the stator and the adjacent rotor. This method is used mainly to prevent hot gases from mainstream entering the cavity, thus prevent damages due to overheat. It can be applied for small GTE due to its simple in design, cheap and controllable. However, it comes to a penalty that it creates a secondary flow mixing with the mainstream that generates loss in shaft power. Hence, it is significant for the designers to estimate the engine performance while considering the air sealing and cooling system to ensure the minimization of power loss and the cavity is sealed. In this study, the Aero-thermal prediction model based on CFD method is proposed to investigate the behaviors of small GTE while considering the cooling and sealing system. The aero-thermal model based on CFD is performed and validated with two generic small GTEs test data at the different RPM for the mass flow, shaft power and the temperature after turbine stage. The aero-thermal model is calibrated and presented for predicting the turbine aero-thermal characteristics while considering the simple air-cooling and sealing system. The outcomes show the characteristics and effects of the sealant air to the overall performance of the GTE, which includes thermal efficiency, change of shaft power and sealing effectiveness.
