Session: 44-07 Tutorial Offshore Wind Turbines
Paper Number: 109113
109113 - Introduction to Offshore Wind Development
The tutorial is an introduction to the wind energy technology, including the various systems in the wind turbine. Participants will be able to understand how a wind turbine works and the functions of the various subsystems as well as the types of wind turbines. It will also cover the fundamentals of wind resources, where participants will learn where to find the required information, how to gather the data, and how to analyse it. Furthermore, the tutorial will focus on offshore wind, where participants will be able to understand the various foundations used and the challenges involved in these foundations. The development process will be reviewed, where participants will learn in depth about the process and the various challenges. Participants will also get to understand the various steps need in the development process and the step-by-step installation method for offshore wind. In addition, the environmental impacts of offshore wind will also be introduced and some of the innovative mitigation measures that have been taken thus far. Participants will learn about the various environmental impacts and will ne encourage to brainstorm ideas on elimination or mitigation measures. Finally, the tutorial will include and interactive portion to engage participants to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to some of the current challenges in the offshore wind industry. The participants will be divided into group and present their findings to the reset of the participants.
