128372 - Experimental and Numerical Study on Heat Transfer and Turbulent Flow in Rotating Channel Roughened with Vortex Ribs
Heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics of novel structure vortex rib in a rotating channel have been investigated both experimentally and numerically under the Reynolds number (Re) from 10,000 to 80,000 and Rotation number (Ro) from 0 to 0.385. The vortex rib cooling structure is proposed by combining W-shaped rib and W-shaped elongated dimple. Compared with the W-shaped rib, the vortex rib strengthens heat transfer by 2.6%-11.4% while reducing the pressure loss by 0.6%-18.7% under non-rotating and rotating conditions, showing high thermal performance. The vortex structure pattern in the channel of the vortex rib is consistent with that of the W-shaped rib, and the longitudinal vortex pairs carry the cold fluid from the mainstream to high-temperature wall surface, resulting in enhanced heat transfer. Compared with the W-shaped rib, the vortex rib is washed by the near-wall vortex, and the flow dead zones in both leading and trailing surfaces are heavily improved, and the velocity boundary layer is significantly thinned, which enhances the near-wall convective heat transport. It is also noted that the vortex rib can severely reduce the TKE in the mainstream of the cooling fluid but keep the near-wall high TKE region, guaranteeing the near-wall turbulent heat transport capacity.
