124456 - Investigation on Flow Field Characteristic in a Double-Wall Configuration Using MRV and CFD
The three dimensional full flow field distribution of a double-wall cooling structure including impingement jets, pin fins and film effusion holes is measured by magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV). The Nusselt number distribution on the target jet-impinging surface and the overall cooling efficiency on the external surface in the same geometry are obtained by computational fluid dynamic (CFD). Flow field results from CFD are also compared with MRV results to validate the reliability of numerical method. Magnetic resonance velocimetry resolves the complex three dimensional flow field in the double-walled sandwich. Impingement jets on the target wall interact with pin fins and the inducing vortices affect film cooling jets on the external surface. On the target surface, heat transfer around the impingement points is enhanced distinctly due to stagnation effect, and local heat transfer around pin fins is also strengthened driving by vortices. Downstream of film cooling holes near the outer surface, counter rotating vortex pairs form and gradually weaken downstream, which palys an important hole on the film covering performance. The overall cooling efficiency on the external surface gradually increases from upstream to downstream and attains the peak value between the second row film holes and the third row film holes.
