129179 - Improved Compressor Performance Prediction Using a Vortex-Reactive Turbulence-Model Extension
The accurate modelling of secondary-flow dynamics is a key aspect of reliable performance predictions for turbomachinery. This is due to the effect of secondary flow on the aerofoil boundary layers, as well as the overall energy budget.
The previously introduced vortex-reactive production model (VRPM) by Mimic & Herbst (2023), enhances the sensitivity of two-equation linear eddy-viscosity turbulence models to rotational effects. This is achieved by modifying the respective production terms of the turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent dissipation rate of a Menter (2003) k-ω SST turbulence model.
The model was previously applied to a linear low-pressure turbine cascade with strong secondary flow where it yielded an improved prediction of the intensity and trajectory of secondary-flow vortices, as evidenced by a comparison with experimentally obtained aerofoil and end-wall pressure distributions, span-wise flow-angle and total-pressure loss distributions.
In this paper, we assess the predictive performance of VRPM using integral performance data of a multi-stage compressor test rig. The model extension leads to a more accurate prediction of multi-stage compressor performance maps. This is achieved by mitigating an underprediction of near-choke mass-flow rates and of the isentropic efficiency near numerical surge. The analysis shows that this is achieved by affecting the formation and propagation of secondary flow.
