Dynamic Characterization of Integral Squeeze Film Dampers (ISFDs) Using a Three Dimensional Transient CFD Approach
Integral squeeze film dampers (ISFDs) are increasingly used to enhance the performance and reliability of rotating machinery; they increase stability, decrease unbalance response sensitivity, reduce dynamic bearing forces and shift critical speeds. Damping is achieved by a squeeze effect within the segregated damper lands and a piston/dash-pot effect at the supply line and end seals. Stiffness is independently controlled by integral “S” shape springs that provide shaft centering and connect the stationary and moving parts of the damper.
Compared to other types of squeeze film dampers, a key advantage of ISFDs in rotodynamic design is the ability to independently adjust the stiffness and damping behaviour in a predictable manner. Furthermore, ISFDs have been shown to generate virtual mass terms, which can modify the overall dynamic stiffness of the system.
Accurate prediction of ISFD dynamic coefficients is crucial for their successful implementation; however, models that use conventional lubrication theory, based on the two-dimensional Reynolds equation, have limitations in accurately predicting the virtual mass and damping coefficients. These limitations stem from the omission of convective inertia terms and the use of simplified geometry.
To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for analysing ISFD dynamic characteristics. Transient analyses are conducted at various ISFD orbit frequencies. The numerical results are then validated against published experimental data, confirming the accuracy of the predictions for both virtual mass and damping coefficients.
