Experimental Research on Variable Damping and Vibration Reduction Characteristics of Actively Controlled Squeeze Film Damper
Traditional squeeze film damper is a type of passive vibration damping devices that utilizes the dissipative effect generated by the squeeze flow of viscous fluid to increase system damping. Since its simple structure and high reliability, traditional squeeze film dampers are popular ways for reducing vibration and enhancing stability of rotors in the field of aero engines. Nevertheless, damping of traditional squeeze film damper is relatively fixed, resulting in a limitation that traditional squeeze film dampers fail to adequately mitigate vibrations in aero-engines under multi-operational conditions.
Hence, this paper designs an actively controlled squeeze film damper structure capable of self-adjusting oil supply pressure based on real-time engine operating conditions to regulate damping and reduce rotor vibration. The actively controlled squeeze film damper utilizes servo valves, associated oil circuits, and corresponding control systems, which take real-time rotor whirl data as input to actively control oil supply pressure, thereby regulating damping and reducing rotor vibrations across the entire operating speed range. For validating variable damping and vibration reduction characteristics of actively controlled squeeze film damper, this paper designs specialized test rig and conducts relevant tests for measuring the damping coefficient of actively controlled squeeze film dampers and peak vibration of the rotor-actively controlled squeeze film damper systems.
The variable damping characteristic of actively controlled squeeze film damper is measured based on a specialized rotating exciter, experiments were conducted to evaluate damping coefficients under different control parameters. Experimental results demonstrate that the actively controlled squeeze film damper achieved a damping variation range exceeding 70%. The vibration reduction characteristic is measured based on peak vibration data from eddy current displacement sensors on rotor-actively controlled squeeze film damper test rig. Relevant test results showed that the actively controlled squeeze film damper achieved a vibration reduction effect of over 80.0% compared to without any squeeze film damper, and over 47.83% compared to traditional squeeze film dampers on the scaled rotor. The structural design and relevant experimental research on variable damping and vibration reduction characteristics of actively controlled squeeze film damper is of significance to area of rotor design in modern aero engines.
