A Transient Study and Anti-Surge Scheme of an Integrally Geared H2 Compressor: Startup, Shutdown, and Trip Scenarios
In this technical paper, a 1D fluid flow system analysis was performed to evaluate the system dynamics for a motor driven 8-stage integrally geared H2 compressor train for a compressor manufacturer. The compressor train focused on the compressor core assembly and included the various intercoolers, aftercooler, recycle loops, and the rotating inertia of the integrally geared compressor components/motor. Aspen HYSYS Dynamics was used to model the compressor system with preliminary compressor data (design operating conditions and train inertia) and associated system equipment specifications for surge avoidance during ESD and stability during normal operational procedures, such as startup and normal shutdown. Baseline simulations were evaluated and mitigation simulations were performed to resolve any issues with the scenario’s baseline results aided in the collaborative system design of the supporting equipment. The modifications included additional recycle flow capacity and anti-surge loop layout modifications. This paper outlines the model inputs, results, and modification simulations for the integrally geared compressor analysis. The following are the main points of the simulation study.
-Collect individual compressors stage data based on aero sizing.
-Prepare inlet and outlet sizing and rating
-Prepare 3D model of core assembly
- Preliminary inertial information for the gear set
- Arrange data sheet for all intercoolers
- Estimated initial interstage piping layout
- Estimate # of ASV for the surge loop
- Model the all individual compressor stages in Hysys with all information
- Implement ASV loop in the analysis and prepare full model for the analysis
-Prepare a preliminary scenario for the analysis and sequence of events.(Three scenarios to be reviewed in dynamic analysis which very much cover vast operating conditions. EMS, Start and Stop. Starting process is very important for the sensitive compressors and it is a good base for the testing arrangement too)
-Initial dynamic analysis results and possible options review in detail
-Run the iteration of different options to select the best option as required-Choose the best options for the compressor and reevaluate the analysis.
-Review all three scenarios for the best option with 2 ASV to cover eight stage compressor range
