Influence of Exit Plenum Volume on Compressor Performance
The exit plenum volume has a multifaceted impact on compressor performance, and rational design of which is crucial for enhancing the performance and stability of compressor. Currently, there are few studies on the influence of the change of exit plenum volume on compressor performance and internal flow. In order to investigate the specific impact of the exit plenum volume on compressor performance under real engine operating and experimental conditions, a coupled computational study is carried out on a 1.5-stage transonic axial-flow compressor and different exit plenums representing the two environments by using three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The research focuses on the influence of the exit plenum volume on compressor performance, revealing that variations in the plenum volume affect the compressor's pressure ratio, efficiency, stable operating range, as well as flow uniformity and stability. Then, the changes in the internal flow field of the compressor under different conditions of exit plenum volumes are studied to explore the compressor stall characteristics. Furthermore, the mechanisms and precursors leading to compressor instability under real engine operating and experimental conditions were identified and characterized. This research provides a theoretical basis for optimizing compressor design and improving its performance, which is of great significance for further enhancing the performance of aero-engines and other propulsion systems.
