Abstract:
This tutorial provides an introduction to the ASME Performance Test Code for Mechanical and Thermal Energy Storage Systems, PTC53-2022. PTC53 covers various machinery-based grid-scale energy storage systems and technologies including thermal, mechanical, and chemical systems that either commercially exist or are under development for meeting long-duration energy storage requirements in various clean energy scenarios.
The tutorial will follow the structure of PTC53, covering these sections: 1. Object and Scope 2. Definitions and Terms 3. Guiding Principles 4. Instruments and Methods of Measurement 5. Computation of Results 6. Report of Results 7. Test Uncertainty An example of the use of the Code will be based on Non-Mandatory Appendix A, which illustrates the performance calculations for a Combined Cycle Power Plant Energy Storage System.
The tutorial will conclude with sample test boundaries for various energy storage systems and will provide time for questions.
