Cooling Characteristics of Combined Slot and Full Coverage Film Cooling on a Combustor Liner
Gas turbines operating on the Brayton cycle require increasingly high turbine inlet temperatures to maximize thermal efficiency. Consequently, the thermal load on combustor liners has intensified, necessitating advanced cooling strategies to protect turbine hot parts. While slot cooling and film cooling are established methods, research investigating their combined performance under realistic combustor flow conditions remains limited. This study experimentally investigates the film cooling effectiveness of slot cooling, full coverage film cooling, and a combined slot/film cooling configuration. Experiments were conducted using the Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) technique to measure detailed surface effectiveness distributions based on the mass transfer analogy. The main flow conditions were set to a velocity of 10 m/s with a turbulence intensity about 10% at ambient temperature and pressure.The results indicated that the slot only configuration provided high effectiveness in the immediate upstream region, which decayed downstream due to mixing with the main flow. Conversely, the full coverage film cooling case exhibited negligible effectiveness upstream but improved downstream due to coolant accumulation. The combined configuration demonstrated superior overall performance, effectively merging the upstream protection of the slot with the downstream coverage of the film cooling holes, yielding the highest cooling effectiveness among the tested cases.
