Measurements of Static Load Characteristics of Floating Sleeve Hybrid Journal Bearings Under High-Speed Rotation
The current work presents an experimental investigation into the static load characteristics of floating sleeve hybrid journal bearings (FSHBs) and provides a performance comparison with conventional hydrostatic journal bearings. The FSHB design integrates a simple thin sleeve supported on multiple compliant bump foil dampers. The bearing sleeve features an open-ended annular ring with a uniquely machined feeding mechanism designed to manage its behavior during high-speed rotor operation. These compliant dampers are composed of thin metal foil strips with preformed bumps, which are critical in determining the overall structural resilience and flexibility of the bearing assembly. Static load experiments are conducted using a high-speed bearing component test rig to measure static load performance and identify the mechanical energy dissipation parameters of the bearing. Testing is performed in both air and liquid nitrogen environments across a range of rotational speeds and supply pressures. The experimental results clearly demonstrate that the static load characteristics of the FSHB rely heavily on the structural properties of the compliant bump foil dampers. Notably, the stiffness of the test bearing proved to be less sensitive to changes in operating conditions, such as supply pressure and rotational speed, when compared to conventional hydrostatic journal bearings. This behavior demonstrates the inherent robustness and reliability of the FSHB configuration under diverse operating environments. This work advances the development of reliable and robust hydrostatic bearing technology with improved damping capabilities, supporting its implementation in high-speed, high-performance turbomachinery.
